Natural and modified cast nylon grades for industrial wear components

Cast Nylon Grades Guide: Natural PA6G, Oil-Filled, MoS₂ and Modified Grades

Cast Nylon Grades Guide: Natural PA6G, Oil-Filled, MoS₂ and Modified Grades

No single cast nylon grade is best for every application.

Natural PA6G is a general-purpose starting point, while modified grades can address specific friction, lubrication, stiffness, impact, temperature or environmental requirements.

Material selection should be based on load, motion, speed, temperature, lubrication, moisture, mating surface and required dimensional stability—not simply colour.

Industrial cast nylon bushings, rollers and wear components made from different grades

Natural Cast Nylon PA6G / PA6C

Natural cast nylon is commonly selected for general industrial wear and machined components.

Typical applications include:

  • bushings;
  • rollers;
  • gears;
  • wear pads;
  • sliders;
  • guide components.

Its suitability still depends on the actual load, speed, environment and dimensional requirements.

PA6G and PA6C are both commonly used designations for cast polyamide 6. Terminology may vary between suppliers and regions, so the exact grade and technical data should always be confirmed.

Oil-Filled Cast Nylon

Oil-filled grades incorporate lubricant into the material system and are often considered for sliding or wear applications where reduced friction or lubrication demand is important.

Possible applications include:

  • bushings;
  • sliding pads;
  • wear strips;
  • guide components.

Selection should still consider:

  • load;
  • speed;
  • mating surface;
  • temperature;
  • moisture;
  • available lubrication;
  • dimensional requirements.

Oil-filled nylon should not automatically be treated as the correct grade for every sliding part.

MoS₂-Modified Cast Nylon

Molybdenum-disulfide-modified cast nylon can be considered where the application requires a different balance of stiffness, friction, wear behaviour or dimensional performance.

The actual effect depends on formulation and supplier specifications.

MoS₂-modified material should therefore not automatically be treated as a universal upgrade from standard PA6G.

Other Modified Cast Nylon Grades

Depending on the formulation and production route, modified options may be available for requirements involving:

  • impact behaviour;
  • low-temperature toughness;
  • elevated-temperature stability;
  • UV exposure;
  • reinforcement;
  • friction and wear;
  • application-specific compliance.

Specific material properties and documentation should be confirmed for the actual grade supplied.

Do not claim a grade is food-safe, flame-retardant, UV-resistant or certified unless the actual supplied grade and documentation support that statement.

This table is a preliminary selection guide only. Final grade selection should be confirmed against the complete operating condition and the technical data of the specific material.

Seven Questions Before Choosing a Cast Nylon Grade

  1. What is the operating load?
  2. Is the component sliding, rotating or primarily static?
  3. What is the operating speed?
  4. What are the normal and peak temperatures?
  5. Is external lubrication available?
  6. Is the component exposed to water, chemicals or outdoor conditions?
  7. Which dimensions, fits or tolerances are critical?

Review the Cast Nylon Grades page alongside the Applications overview when comparing a material direction with the actual duty.

Why Colour Is Not Enough

Blue, natural, black, green or other colours may be associated with different formulations, but colour alone is not a reliable engineering specification.

Two materials with similar appearance can use different formulations.

For purchasing and engineering review, use the grade designation, technical data and agreed specification rather than visual appearance alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is blue cast nylon always oil-filled?

No. Colour alone should not be used to identify a formulation. Confirm the material grade and technical documentation.

Are PA6G and PA6C different materials?

Both terms are widely used for cast polyamide 6. Naming conventions vary between suppliers and regions, and the exact formulation should be confirmed.

Is modified cast nylon always better than natural PA6G?

No. Modified grades are useful when their particular property balance matches the operating requirement. A modification that improves one characteristic may not be necessary for another application.

Can one grade be selected only from the part drawing?

Not always. The drawing explains geometry and tolerance, but load, speed, temperature, lubrication and environment are also important for material selection.

Select the Application Before the Colour

A useful grade review starts with the operating condition.

Natural PA6G may be suitable for many general industrial parts, while oil-filled, MoS₂-modified, reinforced or other grades address more specific requirements.

The correct material is the grade whose documented properties match the actual component and environment. For a related manufacturing-route comparison, see the cast nylon vs extruded nylon guide.
